TV Ambient Light with Intel Edison

Hi, I’m quite new to this and seek knowledges from the experts.

I’m planning to create my own TV ambient light system and would like to use the Intel Edison to power it. My idea was to use a HDMI splitter that take the image from my AppleTV send it the TV and the Intel Edison. Get the Intel Edison to analyze the image borders and send the signal to a RGB LED strip. With my very basic knowledge of the electronics, I was wondering if some of you could enlighten me on how to get the HDMI signal into the Intel Edison. My thoughts were to cut open an HDMI cable and connect the image cable to the Intel Edison.

Here’s what I have:

  • - Intel Edison
  • - Base Block
  • - GPIO Block
  • - Battery Block
  • - RGB LED strip
  • - Power adapter
  • - HDMI cables
  • - HDMI Splitter
  • So, my main question is how can I connect everything together and am I missing anything?

Would it be possible to open a HDMI cable and hook some cable to the image cables and in this case removing the needs for a splitter and a second HDMI cable?

Also wondering on how to provide the power from the Power adapter to the Intel Edison and LED Strip without frying anything?

And lastly, is it a bad idea? I only saw some DIY that were using Arduino with a computer to send the video to the TV and analyze the image for the Arduino.
