Using A Bluesmirf to communicate between two PICs

I am trying to replace a wired USART connection across two PICS with a bluetooth connection. I’ve been trying to use a Bluesmirf but I can’t get it to work. I can get into command mode and play around with the configurations but I don’t know how to configure each Bluesmirf. With all of the variations that I’ve tried, whenever I try connecting to the other Bluesmirf with the “C,*” command I get the error message, ‘connect failed’. Any suggestions? What configurations should I use?
