Using BOB-09118 Opto-isolator with HLG dimming power supply

Hi all,

I’m trying to use Sparkfun’s BOB-09118 (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9118) with a HLG-100H-24B dimming power supply to power some LEDs. The 3-in-1 dimming functionality allows for PWM dimming using DIM+ and DIM- leads coming from the HLG. I don’t understand how I would connect these leads to the pins on the BOB-09118. That device requires HV (high voltage on the output side), HVG (ground on the output side), and one of the 2 output pins (OUT1 in my case). My understanding is that the DIM+ and DIM- pins would normally just be connected to a collector and emitter on a typical opto-isolator, but the extra pin on the BOB-09118 is throwing me off. Do I need to supply a separate voltage+ and ground?

Has anyone had this experience or can anyone recommend a solution?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill.

I’m not familiar with the specific power supply you’re using, but from looking at your description I think you’d want to connect:

  • - DIM- to HVG
  • - DIM+ to either OUT1 or OUT2, (depending on what channel you're using)
  • - and then connect a 10 volt power supply to HVG (ground) and HV. (+10 volts)
  • Your 3-5 volt PWM input would then connect to GND and either IN1 or IN2.

You do need a separate power source for the output side of the Opto-isolator as there is no electrical connection between the input and output sides.
