What kind of detector does a wall stud locater use?

Anyone know what kind of detector is used in those wall stud locators?

I want to say it’s some kind of mass detector?

I’m not interested in their use in the stud detectors, but in their possible use for detecting objects hidden in brush & trees, such as chunks of concrete or rocks. I just can’t find the right description for them that will enable me to start learning about them via Google.

Most of them detect a change in capacitance.
