xbee firmware update

Hello I was purchasing 2 xbee S1 modules with an usb explorer shield.

4214A-XBEE

I want to upload the right firmware, but this brings an error as following:

I am starting the X-CTU Software

PC-Settings–> test query shows:

modemtype: XB24

modemfirmware: 10CD

when I go to Modemconfiguration Read,

I get XB24 XBEE 802.15.4

I want to build a serial communication, and want that it acts as an:

ZIGBEE COORDINATOR AT

But when I choose:

XB24-ZB and ZIGBEE COORDINATOR AT

then I make write (with force update)

But then I get an error message.

Programming modem…Lost communication with modem

Write Parameters…Failed

What Can I do?

I thought I can load the appropriate firmware I need…

Thanks for all help in advance

i WAS TESTING SOME COMBINATIONS: iT SEEMS

XB24 and XB24-DM

is working

Do I have to follow a special order?

any ideas?

The Series 1 XBees can NOT run the ZigBee protocol. You must have the Series 2 XBees to run ZigBee.

You do not need to update the firmware to get Series 1 XBees to communicate. The 802.15.4 protocol works perfectly for simple communications. You just need to set-up a few parameters.

Download and read the XBee document #90000982. Also, dig up the thread in this forum titled “Better XBee Documents” that contains links to info on using XBees. There are other threads here about using Series 1 XBees, go through this forum and read them.

Very special thanx for this comprehensive Answer. Later after writing this post I had realised that I own the series 1 modules. Unfortunately I was buying a book which had a lot of examples for zigbee. But anyway, I will read these other documents and try to learn how the communication works.

Thanks again

Series 1 can run DigiMesh - a better ZigBee, one might argue.

But a beginner should start with basic 802.15.4 communications - as supported by the Series 1.

Then decide if you need/want meshing.
