ZED-F9P-01B-01 always cold starts

I have had the GPS RTK2 board for a while and the board no longer hot starts. I have plugged in the board for 12 plus hours and it still won’t hot start after a drive. I am assuming that the battery is toast and from what I have read this is a Seiko battery and is soldered to the board. If this is the case it is beyond my skill set. This is an expensive board and I can’t afford to replace it and I want hot starts back

Hi Neil (@Neil_Woodhouse ),

If you have this board, the back-up battery is Seiko MS621FE-FL11E. Perhaps there is a Maker Space or an Electronics Repair Store in your area who could change the battery for you?

I hope this helps,
Paul

I agree with the above; I’d suggest finding a replacement battery and then locate a phone repair store or similar to replace it for ya

I wonder if a SparkFun employee can confirm that this is not soldered to the board and can be simply replaced. If it is soldered this is a very poor design. The cost of someone messing up is too high.

Hi Neil (@Neil_Woodhouse ),

It is soldered. To replace it, you need to de-solder the two short legs sticking out from the battery:

I am going to suffer with the cold starts because I can’t risk somebody messing up my only GNSS system. When I get to the point of replacing the board I’ll assess my options. I think this is a major design flaw and replacing the battery should require no skill. Paying to replace the battery is fine, but paying somebody to do it is wrong.

Why not attempt a repair then? It’s pretty basic soldering. If you build a few solderable kits between now and then you should have the skills necessary. And you’ll be able to fix other things as well!

I have found a better board for my needs at about the same price and it supports a coin battery to support the hot start. Much easier to change and does not require soldering.
