Hi, will the built-in LED burn out if it receives 15V instead of 12V? The reason I think I need 15V is because the LED lights the switch is going to be used with are possibly 25 to 35 feet away from the switch and so I want to ensure they receive the full 12V so they can light up fully. Also, does the wiring in the attached diagram look correct or should I be doing something different?
The LED in the switch will need a ground which is suggested but not drawn in the sketch.
It would be best to keep everything within their rated specs but the 15 volts will be OK.
Automotive ‘twelve volt’ seldom is and most devices and accessories have some wiggle built in.
That said, the voltage drop across 40’ should be negligible unless there’s some other issue.
Red & black are conventionally used for DC voltage positive and negative/ground, respectively.
Of course, you can use any colors you like but these conventions make it easier for collaborators to jump in.
