12V Stepper Motor Power Supply

Hi,

I am want to build a cnc with 4 Stepper Motors(http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=9238) - I use two for the X-Axis.

I will control them with an Arduino Mega and 4 Easy Driver v4.2(http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=9402). And now to my question can I operate the 4 Stepper Motors at the Rated Current and Voltage with the 12V Powesupply (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=9442) ?

Stepper Motor:

Rated Voltage : 12V

Rated Current : 0.33A

Power Supply:

Voltage :12V

Current : 0.6A

No.

4 times 0.33 Amps is 1.32 Amps.

It is also good to use a power supply of about twice the expected current draw so look for a 12V 3Amp (or more) power supply.

Pyramid makes a number of inexpensive power supplies.

This one would work.

If you run the motor at a max of 0.33A per phase, when you reach a step where you are half way between 2 full steps, you will draw 70.71% of that current on each phase (as per the datasheet of the A3967 driver IC). That gives you a total of 0.47A per motor so you are looking at about 2A of current at maximum power.

The power supply that waltr suggested will still be suitable.

I think that I’m going to use a ATX computer power supply.

Thanks for your help.
