Looks like a 5 volt version. 
Is there a way to know for sure so I do not burn it out?
Not for sure unfortunately, but the 3.3 volt displays I’ve see have “3.3v” on the label. You can use the 5 volt display on 3.3 volts though.

OK. I guess I can try 3.3V and see what happens.
What range value should the contrast control resistor be? Does it say in the tutorial and I just missed it?
10K would be fine.
