AC to DC

I have finally made a simple circuit that I have been working on for quite some time. I have been hooking up 3 AAs for the power supply but unfortunatly batteries eventually need replaced.

Thats why I’m trying to make a plug-in for a wall-jack so it wont need replacing as long as its plugged in.

From what I understand, power from a wall-jack is AC with an incredible amount of volts. I need to change this into DC with a low amount of volts.

Is there any place where I can buy the stuff to make this?

Or is it easier and cheaper just to buy a converter already made? If so, where could I buy this at?

Thanks!

The simplest way is to use a wall-wart power supply. They’re abundant and available pretty much everywhere. Be aware there are both regulated and non regulated wallwarts. You need to check the voltage before using one if your circuits don’t have a regulator.

As a learning experience, you can always build a linear power supply using a transformer, rectifier, filtering capacitors, as well as a voltage regulator. Be aware the you will be working with mains voltage, which can be lethal.

Something like this DigiKey part should work: T977-P6P-ND

5V/1A regulated wall wart switching supply. Cost $7.00

You can find linear supplies on the surplus market cheaper than this, but I think this will get you started.
