Trying to use an XBee Explorer and Shield boards but in the Exploring XBees and XCTU tutorial it states the following: “Special Considerations for XBee XSC Modules! For those using an XBee XSC series, the pinout is slightly different in the XBee family. Pin 6 on the XBee XSC series uses it as a configuration pin, instead of having an RSSI pin on pin 6 like most XBees. For standard serial UART pass-through uses, this module can be mounted to one of our XBee Explorer boards with a small adjustment. For the explorer’s, locate the RSSI jumper on the back, and cut the trace between the pads with a hobby knife. For the XBee shield, simply disconnect the resistor or LED next to the RSSI pin using a soldering iron.”
However in the current DIGI manual for the XBee-PRO 900HP/XSC RF Modules S3 and S3B it shows Pin 6 DIO10/PWM0 as GPIO/RX signal strength indicator and Pin 3 DIN/CONFIG /DIO14 as Input GPIO/UART data in.
Before I start cutting or disconnecting could someone please clarify what is actually needed here.
Hi sderodeff,
I think I ran into the same bit of confusion when checking the [datasheet we have for the XBee-PRO 900HP/XBee-PRO XSC RF Modules. That datasheet covers both the Pro 900HP and the Pro XSC modules so you might be looking at the pinout for the 900HP version and not the XSC version. The pinout for the XSC is on page 96 of that datasheet if you would like to double check. Also, the [current User Guide from Digi has that pinout for XSC series on page 183.
If we are missing something here with the documentation you are looking at, we would love to take a look at the manual you are referring to and see if we need to update that note but as far as I can tell, it is correct.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion regarding using the XSC series XBee with our XBee Explorer boards. If you have any other questions or concerns about XBee modules or our XBee boards, let us know and we would be happy to help as much as we can.](https://www.digi.com/resources/documentation/digidocs/pdfs/90002173.pdf)](https://cdn.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Wireless/Zigbee/90002173_N.pdf)
I am looking at the User Guide for the XBee-PRO 900HP/XSC RF Modules S3 and S3B, Digi document “XBee-PRO 900HP/XSC RF Modules, 90002173 T” last revision July 2018 and the pinouts shown on pages 23 and 24. I am using the 900HP configuration and your note clarifies that your changes are only for the XSC version (whose pinouts are on p183 as you said).
Can I assume then that I don’t need any of the changes mentioned in your tutorial for those boards and that they can be used as is for the 900HP config?
Thanks for the help,
Steve
Hi again Steve,
Exactly! If you are using the 900HP config, you should not need to adjust anything on the XBee Explorers. That note is only for the XSC series modules. It is just a bit confusing since both of those series share the same datasheet.
