Are there any limits to what speakers I can connect to an arduino mp3 sheild?

I bought the sparkfun arduino mp3 audio shield (v15) and I want to connect a speaker directly (in the three holes next to the headphones connection).

Can I connect there any device I’d like or there’s certain ohm/watts limit I need to know about?

I’m trying to understand if it’s ok to connect 4ohm-3watts speaker directly to the audio shield. What do you think?

You may not get much volume out of that speaker, but it appears that it is safe to connect it to the player, as there are current limiting resistors in series with the audio outputs.

The player is designed for use with headphones, or for connection to a stereo audio amplifier for more volume.
