I like the sounds of this. Seems like they might be selling this as a loss-leader not unlike they did with the Butterfly.

And now I must proceed to beg Atmel to send me one :)landon:

(unless somebody knows a channel through which they can be purchased)

let us know if begging works… I will buy one if that fails (and they actually have a dealer that stocks them).
I suspect they aren’t losing money on these though I doubt there is a lot of profit in them either.
The press release gives no indication on where to go for one despite the claim of immediate availability…would be awesome of SparkFun could deal these.
I have a friend going to work for Atmel in April. I’ll see if he can poke around once he gets settled.
I’ve been monitoring this thread at avrfreaks: http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name … ic&t=47628
Seems like everyone’s looking for one, but not finding.
I sent an inquiry to DigiKey and got back a stupid auto-RFQ response saying they don’t have it.
From the Atmel site, I started contacting various Atmel distributors in Colorado. The only one to respond so far (and it got pushed into an inside sales channel in CA) said this:
Hello Landon,
Thank you for your inquire, my name is Cheryl Ellis and I’m the sales rep from ACI Electronics. I’m just confirming delivery on this kit now and will have a quote for you shortly. Are you interested in also getting a quote for the AVR device AT32AP7000? If so, what is the estimated quantity.
Regards,
Cheryl Ellis

So, when I hear back from her, I’ll post, but she might be “encouraged” if others contacted her as well.

I’ve dealt with sales reps before (trying to get some samples of an Actel Flash FPGA chip). Some won’t talk to you if you’re a hobbyist and need less than a tray (48 usually) chips, although they will sell you a dev kit. I was using my college Email address and got forwarded to the actual Actel area manager, but I wasn’t going to feign “I’m a starving college student” any more as I didn’t want to be asked about white papers, branding, etc.
Foot in the door, yes, foot in mouth, no.
It’s just easier if you plan production to get a dev kit. Heck, sometimes they’ll just give it to you.
I’m curious at the chips. I was looking at it’s slightly newer brother (7001) due to the more friendly package and that it still had the image sensor port onboard.
apparently, arrow is actually taking orders for the ngw100. no stock, though.
digikey now has the atngw100 in their order system. No stock and the delivery date is listed at April 13. Sheesh, so much for atmel’s “immediate availability” on their press release. Why can’t these marketing weasels just say the truth? Is that too much to ask? (of course, one excuse may be that the aforementioned weasels don’t know the truth when they see it)
The board probably was immediately available from Atmel. It probably was put into the distributor availability lists as of that day. That’s actually pretty good for a silicon house.
3 weeks to take delivery and reship? distis are a lot better than that, often fulfilling orders the same day they receive product. plus, they would have had a lot of lead time to get it into their system so I seriously doubt atmel shipped it the day of the announce. It took almost a week just for a couple of distis to get it in their database.
plus, every manufacturer that cares knows you have to load the pipeline before you announce availability.
no, I think this was a screw up by some junior product manager who didn’t understand the kind of lead times needed.
I just ordered a couple from DigiKey - FYI - the ship date they’re estimating now is April 17th.
yeah, I’m in the digikey queue as well. haven’t check to see if my delivery date has changed but I suspect so.
edit: finally checked my order status. they now say it will ship on 4/12 If that’s true then they’ve already had to reorder.
Apparently, you can get better response by going directly to an Atmel FAE or sales guy. I think it’s kind of stupid on their part not to feed the distributors promptly. I’m kind of losing faith in Atmel - Microchip is just plain better organized to let a thousand flowers bloom. Too bad atmel only gets it right on every 5th product… I sure wish I liked the Microchip products better.
FYI - I just checked the current lead time on this from DigiKey. Now they’re saying 4/21 for estimate ship.
I got mine yesterday. Unfortunately, due to a family emergency, I haven’t had a chance to play with it and may not for several days. if it isn’t one thing…
I just got notice that mine shipped…hopefully, I’ll have some time to work with it also when it comes. Will have to figure out a way to carry on a conversation around this device. Hopefully your emergency is not too serious.
my wife had an emergency appendectomy so I’m playing dad, mom and caregiver plus salaryman.
I finally am playing with it now, setting up netboot stuff. documentation is, to put it charitably, thin.

Sorry to hear that Philba. Hope she is doing well.
thanks, she’s doing ok now. its funny, she was visiting Vancouver BC when she had to go the the ER. Kind of sucks to have that on a vacation but your BC doctors seemed to know their stuff.
I’ve got the ngw working now. It’s a pretty cool board. So far I’ve only done a a few things but am liking the product.
[Here’s a first look at the AVR32 NGW100 that I put up on my web site if anyone’s interested in seeing what it looks like and acts like out of the box.](http://sawdust.see-do.org/avr/files/AVR32FirstLook.html)
That is a pretty cool board! Too many toys; too little time!
