You can get free samples of most PICs from sample.microchip.com

I need more than a few. Thanks
Do you have a better idea of quantity? If you are getting boards made in China, often the board manufacturers can source ICs cheaply in-country.
I believe there’s some commentary on this somewhere in Bunnie’s Blog: http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog
Buying direct from microchip is usually quite a bit cheaper if you’re looking for small quantities. Once you hit the price breaks at 25+, there’s not much of a difference.
Futurlec have a limited range but good prices for just a handful of parts, otherwise try digikey.

Help us help you.
(1) What part number (include package code)?
(2) What quantity (min and max)?
(3) What target price?

Take a look at mouser prices - they are quite a bit better than digikey.
For example the 16F88-i/p is 5.00 q1, 2.40 q100 from Digikey and 2.50 Q1, 1.32 q100 from Mouser.
This is one of the reasons I seldom buy from DigiKey. Interestingly, Atmel parts are cheaper from DigiKey.

Yep, I noticed that too.
I still use both, just ordered some Atmel AVRsPhilba:

while ordering a few other items, and happen to
choose Mouser over Digikey today.
I just rechecked AVR prices at both and I don’t see
any difference for my needs:
Mouser
ATmega168V-10AU Atmel Microcontrollers –
1 $4.00 TQFP
10 $3.25
25 $2.51
100 $2.33
ATmega168V-10PU Atmel Microcontrollers –
1 $4.11 PDIP
10 $3.34
25 $2.58
100 $2.39
Digikey
ATMEGA168V-10AU 32-TQFP
1 $4.00
25 $2.51
100 $2.33
ATMEGA168V-10MU 32-QFN
1 $4.11
25 $2.58
100 $2.39
ATMEGA168V-10PU 28-DIP
1 $4.11
25 $2.58
100 $2.39
I know - I’m splitting hairs, but I don’t see a huge
advantage to either, and its good to have multiple
vendors chasing after my business.

Just saw email from Mouser for today’s
order that I placed
earlier. They charged me California Sales Tax. Bummer.
I’ll have to check Digikey, I expect to not
pay sales tax for out-of-state transactions.
Digikey = Mn
Mouser = Tx

Hi Peter,
The post was edited, did you see that?
To the OP;
I really like this website: http://findchips.com/
I have it added as a search type in the search box in the top righthand side of firefox, quick and easy to look up a part.
Honestly if Digikey is too expensive then you are either being too cheap or need a lot of chips.
Try living in Australia or another smaller country for a while, you won’t complain about a few cents or dollars on digikey parts then.

Yes, and I posted that the OP should have answeredgussy:

Gussy,
Thanks for the info. I always use digikey and mouser. Recently I bought some components from a company in Taiwan. Those components, for example, from digikey cost over 1 dollar while I got it from Taiwanes company for few nickles. I thought, there might be a company that sells ICs cheap too. Thanks
.
Lots of cheap counterfeit parts are coming out of China. I’d play safe and get them from a reputable supplier.
Leon
try www.es.co.th - many components, including Atmel and Microchip ICs, are much cheaper than from US sources, if they have stock.
What is the company in Taiwan?

I agree, honestly if you are buy just a couple or parts whats a few $$?? If you are buying 1000’s of them and still looking to save a few cents here you really haven’t costed your project very well.
Cheers,
Angus
Hey thanks. 4uconnector is an extremely useful site. I think there must be some Chinese language equivalent of Mouser and Digikey too that would offer better prices. I sent my friend in Beijing a note to see what she can find out.
For you skeptics, actually this is a more important question than you might think. Sure the difference is only a few bucks on small orders, but those bucks add up. Sites like www.es.co.th are giving the US 1000 unit price on single units, and discounting from that on orders of 50 and 100. So the savings really add up.
Also I have noticed that certain parts are completely unavailable in small quantities in the US. For example I needed 100 pieces of 180pF 0805 capacitor the other day. Digikey? Mouser? Full reels of 4000 only. I bought them in Bangkok instead. My 100 units cost less than a dollar.
