BlueDongle USB modem to Sparkfun Bluetooth DIP module

I have a BlueDongle USB modem WRL-08180 operating well with a WiTilt Bluetooth accelermoter SEN-08563. Local modem commands through Hyperterminal to the BlueDongle allow me to successfully do inquiry “I” and connect “C” to the WiTilt. I now want to try my own circuit using the Sparkfun Bluetooth DIP module WRL-08461. When I apply 3.3V power to the DIP module the BlueDongle modem inquiry “I” will find the DIP module and identify it as “0218090A1613,SparkFun-BT,1F00”. However the BlueDongle modem connect “C” says “TRYING” and then returns “CONNECT failed”. I have tried this with Tx and Rx on the DIP module connected for loopback and not connected, as well as CTS and RTS connected and not connected. Do I need to set the BGB203 to “Automatic Connection” by a local modem command from my local CPU or is there a hard-wired method to force “Automatic Connection” at power-up? Please advise. Thanks.
