My BlueSMIRF Silver was working fine. I had to disconnect it from a breadboard and reconnect it a couple of times to update code on my microcontroller via USB. Now when I reconnect it, both the Red and Green LED’s instantly light up when it’s inserted (5v VCC), and it has all but disappeared from view. When I attempt to look for it on my mac it no longer appears in the discovered devices listing. Can I assume it’s dead? If so, is it DEAD dead…or is there some kind of factory refresh I can do as a last resort?
Hmmm…
Ran into a similar problem here. Sorry, I don’t have fix or suggestion for you, but am including my observations and issues as well.
In my case, I issued a remote reboot over RF. Since after that the device is not discoverable any longer. I restarted the BlueSMiRF Gold, but still no signs of connecting up.
The RED LED lights up on power on and continues blinking.

OK so yeah it wasn’t dead. As I plugged it into the breadboard with the Arduino running, the rx pin instantly began receiving data. (I didn’t realize there was a Serial.print() command running in a loop.) The BlueSMIRF did NOT like this. When I went back to it this morning I gave the BlueSMIRF power only, it worked fine. Heh. Ooops.
So lesson learned, kids…when attempting to troubleshoot hardware, isolate it from all other hardware before writing to the forum that your hardware is dead. Also, be REALLY sure before you place an order for replacement hardware. (Don’t worry, I’ll use them anyway.)
Sparkfun support replied to my query:
"I would issue the hardware reset found in the command set.

So I followed the instructions in the Section 3.3
Factory Reset- Set this switch/PIO on powerup. This arms the reset function. Then toggle the switch/PIO 3 times and all settings in the device (other than the Bluetooth name) will return to defaults.
That worked!
