my bluesmirf dead on arrival?

I just got my new bluesmirf after [the last one fried.

Problem is, the red led won’t stop flashing. I go to bluetooth ‘add devices’ on my laptop and it doesn’t see it, yet it sees my cell phone. At first the LED flashes really fast, but after a minute or two the flashing slows down (if that means anything to anyone).

Couldn’t find anything on google . . . anyone disagree that my bluetooth was DoA? (dead on arrival)

Oh and I need this fixed asap, leaving for robogames in 2 days . . .

(its simply powered on 5V regulated, nothing else connected except a duck antenna, using Asus bluetooth dongle, and before my last one fried I had no problem using it)

Well, i think a minute after power-up, the module changes modes so something must be working…

With defaults that is.

Welcome btw.

new updates, still no luck . . .

Some things I should clarify.

  • I tried multiple computers

  • tried a different bluetooth PC dongle

  • tried resetting my PC

  • using XP

  • this is the most recent bluesmirf version

  • just flashes the red LED, and speeds up flashing after a min or two

  • tried different duck antenna

  • tried different wiring, different 5V regulators

I tried resetting the bluesmirf to default settings, but nothing changed. Powered it up while holding 3.3V to pin #22. Then manually changed the voltage on that pin from 3.3V to ground three times as in the manual. Did I do that right? Is there another way to reset it by sending commands? I have a USB to TTL adapter I can use.

Also, I spoke with a friend with a similar problem. His bluesmirf is the old version, bought about a year or two ago. Except instead of the red LED flashing, its the green LED. I tried everything above to get his working too, but it won’t. I used his about a year ago and it worked fine then. No luck!

Hooked both of the non-working bluetooths to a CP2103 (USB to TTL adapter) and sent these commands that supposedly initiate a reset:

+++

ATFRST

Nothing changed, still nothing working . . .

I never deviated from factory settings (ie Fast Mode, etc).

Don’t know how much help I can be, but here are a couple of questions:

  1. After you issue the attention command “+++”, does the modem respond with “OK”?

  2. Have you jumpered RTS to CTS on the board? I know that I couldn’t talk to the board until after I did that.

Through it’s wired interface, have you tried sending it “$$$” within 60 seconds of powering the module?

You should get “CMD” back.

Didn't get anything returned with +++, and haven't jumpered RTS or CTS.

Interesting, I got CMD returned, and the LED is now flashing hyper fast. But still my PC can't connect to the bluetooth wirelessly. And no other commands seem to be responding. Ideas?

Also, someone informed me that the LED colors were inverted on the new version of BlueSmirf (on the old ones, green meant not connected).

I figured out what was wrong: me.

Well actually, its the differences between the old and new Bluesmirf versions that totally threw me off.

On the old version, a flashing red light means an error occurred. A flashing green light would mean not connected. A solid red light would be connected.

But thats not true on the new version, confusing me. The solid green light now means connected, and a flashing red light means not connected.

Anyway, there are other differences. On the old version, I can just go to hyperterminal, select com6, push connect, and it’ll work. Definitely doesn’t work this way on the new version.

On the new I needed to go into a bluetooth menu and add it manually. Now I had tried to do that, but I didn’t see ‘Sparkfun-bt’ like it was called on the old version. Instead I saw things like my cell phone, ‘mikeys laptop’, etc.

I also saw ‘Firefly’ with a picture of a cell phone, so thinking its just some guys cell phone I ignored it. I tried adding it before but got an error (don’t remember why).

Well, I tried adding it again and well . . . it all works now. Bllaaaaaahhhhh!

On the bright side, the old version took like 1.5s to connect, while the new only 0.5s

All is good?

Oh well, have fun at RoboGames!

Where are these things documented? I’ve looked on the BlueSMIRF page but find only a generic manual for Roving Networks BT modules (which I presume is the heart of the BlueSMIRF). Nothing on what the lights mean, etc. I feel like I’m missing a manual someplace… or are we expected to trawl through the RN manual and BlueSMIRF schematic, matching things up ourselves?

Thanks,

  • Joe

If you’re not sure which LED is which, just get a DMM and trace the tracks. With the power off…

Then read up [here what the two pins do.](http://www.rovingnetworks.com/documents/RN-41.pdf)

Kinda like in the open-source world saying, “You don’t need documentation; if you want to know what something does, just read the source code!”

Hi to everyone!

I received the “Bluetooth Modem - BlueSMiRF RP-SMA” some days ago and I am having some problems with it…

I can establish a connection only in “command mode” but not in “data mode”. I am getting an “ERR-connected” error message every time I try to connect to it in “data mode”. So still I haven’t seen the green LED on yet, always is off. It is possible that the module is broken?

Some clarifications:

  • I tried multiple computers

  • tried a different bluetooth PC dongle

  • tried resetting my PC

  • using Windows 7

  • this is the most recent bluesmirf version

  • tried different wiring, different 5V regulators. 3.3V

  1. The pins CTS/RTS on the module are shorted.

  2. I am using LYNX term to connect to the module.

  3. When I power up the BlueSMiRF the red LED blinks fast for 60 seconds. The green LED is off.

  4. If I establish a connection between the first 60 seconds and I enter the command $$$ I access to the module in “command mode” so I can configure it. The red LED blinks very fast. The green LED still is off.

  5. If I try to connect when the red LED blinks slower the red LED turns off and nothing else happens. The green LED continues off.

  6. Or if in “command mode” I try to connect to the module in “data mode” I get “ERR-connected” error message.

Any ideas?? Suggestions?? I think I will contact the distributor and say that the module was not ok when shipped…
