Bluesmirf TTL DB9

I am currently working on a project that will allow an iPhone application to communicate with a micro controller that has a 5V TTL input. Right now the device is controlled by a laptop with a USB to TTL DB9 cable. Our original idea was to utilize the serial port of the iPhone/iPod to directly plug into the TTL port on the micro controller, unfortunately Apple is crazy when it comes to allowing serial communications from iOS.

We are now going the bluetooth route and believe that the BlueSMiRF chips will give us exactly what we need. Admittedly, I am a software engineer and have limited experience with hardware design. Can anyone give me advice on what we would need in order to correctly connect the BlueSMiRF into the micro controller’s TTL DB9 port? Thanks for the help!
