Build a better Casio sk-1?

Hi folks,

I’m brand new to the forums here. Seems like the right place to post this question.

I’d like to build a box that is essentially the sampling section of my sk-1, with midi in and USB in.

So… I’d drop a WAV in using USB and the box will pitch that WAV across all 88 keys.

I think one of the boards (tsunami?) Might do it but I can’t determine that for sure.

I don’t want to go the route of dumping 88 separate WAV files, one for each note.

Maybe there’s a way to actually use the Casio sample/playback section and just add midi/USB connectivity?

Anyway… You get the idea. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi jp, and thanks for posting.

You’d pretty much need to gut almost all of the electronics from your keyboard and build a new controller from scratch to make the keyboard work with a Tsunami. (It’s possible, but would be a lot of work.) While you could use the Tsunami to produce sound from key presses, the firmware on the Tsunami doesn’t allow access to the SD card through USB so you’d need to remove the card to modify the files on it and the Tsunami can’t give the rest of the keyboard MIDI capability over USB.

I hate to sound discouraging, but there’s not an easy way to do what you’re trying to accomplish without a complete rebuild, or at a minimum detailed drawings and schematics for the existing electronics and making a custom controller that can interface with the existing hardware and Tsunami. It would be a very interesting project if you can make it work though.

Oh, I don’t need to keep any of the original sk1.

I’m happy to build from scratch. I just thought that might be easier somehow.

I have an 88key midi controller and all I want is a box that functions like the sk sampler.

One audio file played back at different speeds depending on which key is pressed.

Sorry if I was unclear about that.
