Can I Use myoware on face?

Hello, I’m working on a student project to help people who cannot speak communicate through voluntary jaw and facial movements. We plan to combine surface EMG with a jaw-movement sensor and train a model to recognize movements that trigger spoken words or phrases.

Could you anyone please advise on the following?

  1. Is MyoWare suitable for detecting relatively small jaw/facial muscle signals? Are there any limitations or recommended electrode sizes and placements?

  2. What accessories would we need to use external electrode cables, keeping the boards away from the face?

  3. Do you have guidance for using two sensors together, including reference-electrode connections and safe battery-powered data acquisition?

Our initial goal is to recognize a small set of deliberate movements, then investigate whether we can reliably distinguish more. We would appreciate your recommendation and the relevant datasheet or connection guide.

Thank you.

  1. So, there aren’t any real risks associated with facial use, other than the electrodes can be pretty sticky/painful to remove…the myoware is able to detect small muscle movements, though on the face the electrode placement becomes crucial (because most every facial muscle for speech has layers of other muscles underneath or above)

  2. These https://www.sparkfun.com/sensor-cable-electrode-pads-3-connector.html - they are also included in the wireless kit

  3. We have a fairly extensive hookup guide, the actual connections are shown down in the ‘hardware hookup’ section. Example 3 covers using a wireless shield as a peripheral and a BLE-capable MCU as the host/controller (‘central’)

I’d say it is plausible but will require some experimenting to determine how accurate it can be
