can not program older XBee with CoolTerm or XCTU

I have an older Xbee radio I am trying to program, but neither CoolTerm or XCTU seem to work with it.

I am using the Sparkfun XBee Explorer USB. I have installed the FTDI drivers correctly.

I can see the radio in my device manager on COM3, so I know it is there.

When I connect via CoolTerm, I never see any echo back from the radio (I do have ‘local echo’ checked).

When I connect via XCTU, it never finds the radio.

Could this be because this is a MaxStream Xbee and not a Digi?

Figured it out: the radio was not at default settings, once I selected ‘all’ for ‘discover radio modules’ in XCTU, it found it!
