Just beginning to go through the Wireless Sensor Network book,
and I see that the book is written with examples for the series 2
firmware.
So, shopping for the radios, I see the series 2 is now obsolete.
Can anyone tell me if the series 3 (2.4gHz) zigbees use the
same firmware as the series 2. I don’t want to add to my
box of obsolete things.

Probably not, as it has different hardware and functionality. But as I don’t know enough about the newest series I would ask the people that should know it: the manufacturers at digi.com Go to the forum and search, or use the contact form directly.
As the ‘series x’ designation isn’t really an official one I would suggest you ask about the compatibility between the specific model designations and firmware.
I decided to try the series 3.
If they’ve changed the firmware, I guess I’ll see.
It looks like the series 3 only uses less power,
and everything else is the same. It always amazes me
how the tech data seems so vague and poorly written.
It’s probably me though.
