Can't connect to Redboard with Arduino on macOS

I’m new to Arduino but familiar with lots of tech. I just bought the SIK v4.1.2. Carefully read and followed the docs RedBoard Qwiic Hookup Guide - SparkFun Learn and How to Install CH340 Drivers - SparkFun Learn. My computer has macOS 12.7.6, I installed CH340 drivers (no drivers existed prior), arduino ide 2.3.4, etc. I did multiple reboots, no luck. Even tried removing CH340 drivers and reinstalling. When I plug in the Redboard Qwiic the usb device appears, but I still can’t select the Redboard board in Arduino IDE. Trying to help my child learn this, and getting quite frustrated that we can’t even get to the point where we send a basic command.

The device shows up as “/dev/cu.usbserial-1430”, the docs say it should be “/dev/cu.wchusbserial*******”
I have a macbook with Intel chip. Seems like either the docs need to be updated (they mention macOS 10.x which is quite old) or the process is broken? The CH34x_Install_V1.5.pkg installer puts the usbserial.kext in /Library/Extensions, I reboot, still can’t connect.

based on info I found on the main arduino forum from a user with a similar problem, I tried using board name “Arduino Uno” and that works at least for SIK example 1, I can upload it to the board and it works.

Sparkfun – please test the SIK with macOS 12.x and 13.x, and update your docs to fix typos and add info for current macOS!

For anyone with a mac with apple silicon, you’ll likely have problems trying to use this board due to changes in how kext works, buy something else.

It’s due to a security update Apple made that put the drivers in limbo until they once again whitelist them :-/

Older releases of the OS have been rumored to work if downgrading is an option (or if you have an older machine around)

Sidebar: I keep an old Windows laptop that I got for $50 around that I never update anything on which has saved me a few times for stuff like this (again, if that is an option for you)

Was it purchased from us? If so head over to Returns (contact vendor if purchased elsewhere) and we’ll get ya squared away
