Device to send Wake on Lan packets

I’m trying to solve a problem of “remotely” waking a machine through wake on lan. The trick is the machine is not on a network, rather in a vehicle.

My thought was that perhaps a small microprocessor w/ an ethernet port could be configured to send out WOL packets once it powers up. I’ve seen devices that run a tiny embeded webserver, surely something like this can be possible? Perhaps a simpler solution? It would need to have some sort of way to edit the MAC address of the ethernet port that needs to be woken up.

If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions I’d love to hear any feedback, or you can just tell me how crazy i am

How’d you go with this?

I currently need this functionality and would buy this sort of functionality (rather than develop from scratch).

There are DC/DC converters made for the power supply for Mini ITX systems being put in cars. Some models I have seen have a connection to the ignition switch and when the car is turned on, a small circuit on the power supply “presses” the power button turning the PC on. When you switch the car back off again, the power supply “presses” the power button again, causing the PC to start shutting down.

Have a look at this… http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=10#p1821
