Diodes 1n4004 and 1n4001

I’m working on a project that’s requesting me to use a 1n4004 diode and sparkfun’s store only has 1n4001 diode. I want to purchase from sparkfun because I work 2 blocks away. I’m new at this so data sheets are a bit hard for me to understand.

Does anyone know if there’s a big difference between these and if so why?

Thanks a lot of the help!

What’s the project – this “minor” bit of information will actually help people answer your question!!!

How much current goes through the diode?

More to the point: if you’re just two blocks away, why not just go over there and ask them?

It’s an automated garden.

Here’s the pdf of the project…

They don’t have a store front. If you knew you’re going to get and ulcer answering this question, maybe you shouldn’t?

It’s a diode across the relay coil to prevent a transient from damaging the rest of the circuit. A 1N4001 should be OK, but you could use two in series to make sure.
