Disapointed by the XA1110 GPS

Hello All

I bought the XA1110 GPS Breakout board from Sparkun for a personal project and I have to say I don’t feel like it is a good tool for a GPS

1) it takes sometimes minutes to get the signal and send GPS coordinates

The Datasheet available on Sparkfun (Which is the datasheet for the Titan X1,) says on page 16 : “ON a cold start, max 60sec”. I tried 5 times indoor and 2 times out of 5 I do have coordinate after 3 or 4 minutes… the other 3 times it took more than 5 minute so I hard reset the device. I have to say that I don’t use antenna yet so things might be easier with an antenna. I’ll have to try. I also have to try it outdoor, I’ll try to update you with results once I do the test

2) Precision is not good

The datasheet says about the precision “Without aid : 3m”. I need to says that I don’t use any antenna on the breakout board but the coordinates given are sometimes Off by more than 10m. I don’t know if having an adapted antenna makes it easier.

I know it’s the cheapest GPS device but it doesn’t comply with what the datasheet says.

Anybody else experience the same kind of problems with the XA1110?

Gps is notdesigned to work indoors.

You might give it a try outside under an open sky. I think you will find under those conditions it will perform as stated in the documentation.

It is quite impressive that the GPS unit works that well indoors. Many don’t work at all in a building.

Go outside, to where you have a clear view of the sky and try again. You will see a dramatic improvement in performance.
