Electret microphone

Dear Nic,

I am electronically challenged( capabilities are in the medical field) and was hoping you could help me. I have a project in mind and need to know if there is a measurable current in an electret microphone when it is not in use. For instance could one have a programme detecting this current and should the quantity change cause an effect?

If, as I have surmised from my limited knowledge, such a current exists what would affect it? For instance if the air was replaced with a gas would that affect the current?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Aihesha.

I’m sorry to say no, electret mikes have an FET built in and need an external power supply… Sorry

You might get more answers if you post this question in the “Projects and …” Forum.

FWIW I’m sure the microphone draws some current when it’s powered. I’m not sure what you mean be “not in use”. Do you mean when there’s absolutely no sound/pressure variations ? Why don’t you tell us what the “project you have in mind” is an let the non-electronically challenged give you some ideas as to what might work and what might not.
