Finally figured some survey stuff out

I am a rank amateur compared to a lot of you folks and this might seem pretty basic but I managed to download the shapefile from the County Registrar Of Deeds and got it into QGIS. I then managed to export it to SW Maps and finally after 6 years of living here I now can see exactly where my property line is. This has been pretty cool.
Sparkfun RTK Postcard + Portability Shield and using a trial of RTKData for NTRIP correction data.

I’m impressed that I managed to pull this off.

excellent :+1:

It worked under the trees. Very good.

Awesome Work @JohnEH !

Nice use of the public records, but be aware that while the properties are correct relative to each other, they may not be accurate in relation to the actual ground. If you have a good starting point though, you can usually fit everything else in from the deed data.

Thanks for that explanation. I have been looking for actual survey markers but haven’t stumbled across one yet.

They will probably be buried anywhere from 3" to 2 feet deep, depending on how old your lot is and when it was last surveyed. If you can find a survey plat of your property at the tax assessor’s or court records room, then it should show what kind of monument is at each corner (1/2" rebar, 1" iron pipe, etc.). If you live at an intersection, there is usually never a monument placed at that corner of the property, so don’t waste your time there (which is ironic since road intersections are usually used as a point of beginning). The most likely monument you’ll find is a back corner that is shared with other lots. If you can find a neighbor’s corner, you can work backwards from there to find yours.

Thanks again. The iron rods were driven in 1957 best I can tell with the establishment of this subdivision. My neighbor had a survey done in 2021 and found two iron rods (the two I need to confirm my accuracy) and a control point on the radius of the next road over along the street here.

This whole learning experience has taken some time but I’ve been having a ball. And learned a lot by chasing down old deeds and maps. Found the deed history of this land (and surrounding land) back to 1898. Interesting reading for sure.

I found an iron pipe called out my neighbors deed making two points. While it didn’t line up perfectly with my SW Maps GeoJSON projection it was darn close and a Hz accuracy of 8mm. The red x’s are GeoJSON and the green circles are a Shapefile layer.

Iron rod #1 was pretty right on the money. I’m not really digging any deeper into this as it looks pretty close to me. I’m not a surveyor, I’m not trying to get official survey results. I’m just a guy playing with RTK. Had a long talk over the iron rod with my neighbor today and he knew quite a few details about the survey done on his lot which is adjacent to mine. I’ve learned a ton and not necessarily seeking perfection.
