FM Transmitter/Receiver Chips

Silicon Labs has a family of chips that are lookin pretty sweet, but I can’t find a source for them anywhere. The Si4700 and Si4710 are single chip FM tuner and FM transmitter (respectively). They only require two external components and you can communicate with them via I2C (e.g., turn them on, off, volume, etc). I’m thinking along the lines of sweet built-in transmitter on an MP3 player …

They’re a QFN20 package as well … seems like a good candidate for a breakout board.

Do you guys think you can get these chips?

Best regards,

Brad

This would be soooooo cool!

I would buy both:

one to build an FM transmitter for MP3 in car operations, since the commercial ones are so pricy. Maybe also to transmit data in a onboard car system. The system could acquire data and all, and play messages trough the car’s Radio.

Also, the receiver is the keystone for my laptop-speakers, FM tuner bicycle helmet  I neeed one!

did you use findchips.com? digikey carries them though they are currently out of stock - $15 for Q1, on the si4700, btw.

also, have you tried the sample route? sometimes you can get them for free just by asking. I don’t know SiLabs policy on samples, though.
