FT2232D IC

Hi ,

I was wondering if SFE is planning to stock the FTDI USB to (2X) RS232 IC?

Also i don’t know if this is the right place to ask but can i use any of the standard SFE FT232RL Break out boards for making a USB to RS485 converter.

thanks

yes you can use a max485(half duplex) or max488(full duplex) to make the conversion…

Thanks,

I got both the chips, could you suggest a suitable circuit diagram ?

The datasheets for each should show you normal application circuits, which should work fine for your purposes.

Hello friend, it is good think.

Hi ksamay…

I just posted a schematic for a TTL version of RS485 over [here.

It’s not ready for primetime and it’s not quite RS485, but it might give you a starting point.

(I assume this is for Dynamixels, since I’ve seen your screen name on Robosavvy.)

Cheers,

Hi Petej,

Thanks, your schematic is a great starting point.

yup , its for a dynamixel ( RX series ).

I am planning to make a custom converter board for use with a gumstix board on my (future) humanoid.

I read in a thread on Robosavvy that latency is a issue with the Rs485 line. so i was thinking if i divide my bus into two and use the 2 serial outputs on the new FT2232D IC and convert them to Rs485 individually. it might reduce send time by half!

But , i am not able to find FT2232D online ( i.e cheap and small quantity ).

Thanks

RS stocks them:
