Hello. I was wondering if it is possible to get a gps signal for my iPod touch by simply hooking up a gps receiver to it via usb. I hope you understand what I’m saying. Im not sure if anyone is familiar with the iGPS360 by orange gadgets but that appears to be what they have done. There are iphone apps that work with 3rd party gps receivers such as the iGPS360.
Alright thanks for the reply but would I be able to take one of these (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=8291) and wire it to an ipod usb cable and use it as a gps receiver for the ipod. I’m asking if it is possible to directly hook one of those up to my ipod.
That GPS receiver has a Serial Interface. An iPod USB cable won’t have the correct signals available - you need a cable that has the serial connections from the iPod.
If the iPhone is bluetooth enabled, you should be able to do it with a UART to Bluetooth adapter like the BlueSmIRF or RN-41 etc. You would either need to find or develop an Iphone ap though.
Anyway - dont iPhones have a GPS device of their own?

I don’t beleive that the iPhone/iTouch supports the ‘Serial Port Protocol’ (SPP).
TomTom is a GPS Kit for the iPod Touch, further closing the gap between Apple’s top-end iPod and the iPhone. The unit will have a built-in GPS receiver which “turns your iPod touch into a mobile navigation device.” Many people choose the iPod Touch over the iPhone because you don’t have to sell your life to a cellphone carrier for two years to get it. But there are omissions from the hardware which are much more painful than losing the ability to make phone calls. Along with the lack of GPS, you lose always-on internet access, the camera and the compass.
Well I have a 1st gen iPod touch. So I don’t have Bluetooth or gps.
I was just wondering if it was as simple as hooking up a reciever like the ones I can buy from sparkfun.com to my iPod via usb/iPod cable, just like the iGPS360. I baiscly want to build my own iGPS360. I hope you understand what I’m saying.

The iGPS360 doesn’t connect via the USB port - it uses the Serial Port on the iPod. So YES you can connect a serial GPS receiver to the iPod. But NO, you cannot use the iPod USB cable - you need an iPod serial cable.
