Looking for a drop-in replacement (I mean electrically only… mechanically don’t care) for the no longer available (GPS-11058) and only need multi-meter accuracy not the high accuracy of the RTK modes. Can the ZED-F9P be operated as a simple GPS receiver with no corrections or second unit to just dump NMEA strings to the USB-C with the limited accuracy like the old 11058 product did?
Short answer: Absolutely yes.
GPS-11058 is old indeed. There have been many improvements including dual frequency reception. The ZED-F9P will beat the pants off the Venus receiver if you can afford the upfront cost of the receiver and a good dual band GNSS antenna (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/17751).
Without any RTK corrections or headache, just a stock ZED with TOP106 antenna, and a clear view of the sky I’ll regularly see 0.3m or better HPA. The Venus and L1 receivers are above 1.0m, usually ~2.0m in horizontal positional accuracy.
By default, the ZED outputs NMEA just as you’d expect, at 1Hz. You can, of course, take it much further and more advanced, but it’s an electrical drop in for sure.
