So I discovered this site this summer and explored a bit and found the projects rather interesting. I was elated when I found that Sparkfun boasted a beginner tutorial that went along with a purchasable kit. When the kit arrived, and I pulled up the tutorial, I just didn’t get it… I’ve discovered that I possess essentially NO knowledge whatsoever regarding embedded electronics or electronics in general… How can I get to a level that will allow me to complete the first tutorial?
I went to the “Beginning Embedded Electronics- 1” lecture and purchased the “Power supply kit” which includes:
Power Supply Lecture:
Bread board
5 volt regulator (LM7805)
500mA PTC
10uF Capacitor
100uF Capacitor
Power switch
1N4001 Protection Diode
LED x 2
330 Resistor x 2
9V Wall Wart
Barrel jack
Red wire
Black wire
The lecture is introduced as “written for those with mild electronics background (aka Sophomore in Electrical and Computer Engineering),” which I am not. I was primarily curious as to how to get to this level.
(I’ve done a fair share of computer programming, but know hardly anything about EE)
Summed up: What’s the best way to strengthen my knowledge of electrical engineering?
I would suggest picking a specific project that you have an interest in and has a lot of beginner step by step tutorials.
Since you have programming skills, I would suggest picking up an Arduino and following any of the basic tutorials on programming it and lighting up an LED, then progress from there.
I’m suggesting an Arduino specifically due to the shear volume of beginner support their is out there right now. Once you get something working you can then branch out.
