Help selecting RTK device for new project

Hi,

I am working on a research project for work where I need to record positional data from a rover. I was looking at the two devices GPS-19984 and GPS-20000, and I’m leaning towards the GPS-20000.

I have a couple questions regarding both devices and was hoping to get some answers.

GPS-20000

  1. I noticed that this devices comes with 12-months of the correction subscription. If the subscription lapses and I do not renew for the $500, will I still be able to use the device in GNSS Positioning Mode without RTK fix? I understand it’s limited to 30cm accuracy, but I’m curious what kind of accuracy I can expect if the subscription lapses.

GPS-19984

  1. For RTK Fix, I am under the impression that I’ll need a reference station to get within the 1.4 cm range. Can I use two of these GPS-19984 devices; one as a reference, and the other on the rover?

  2. If I can use two of these in the situation outlined. Can I read the positional data of the rover from the reference station location via serial? For example; I have one GPS-19984 as a reference station next to my laptop, and I have an additional GPS-19984 on my rover. Can I read the rover’s positional data from a direct serial connection to the reference station?

Thank you in advance!

The value of L-Band services is that you don’t need internet access in real-time via cellular modem or blue-tooth phone, and the monthly cost those might incur as well as service availability out in the boonies. PointPerfect is around $34/month billed monthly.

The ZED-F9P’s used here can also take RTCM3 via NTRIP / RTK2GO / ONOCOY type services, the accuracy there is going to exceed PointPerfect. The ZED-F9P can also generate RTCM3 in a Static Base configuration, so you could establish one with these devices, or some combination of low cost SparkFun gear at your home/office, with internet connectivity. Generally you want to your base to be within around 7-8 KM

Several US States, and some counties, have established infrastructure for NTRIP server/casters, I expect this to increase, check with your local DOT or GIS offices.

To be clear, GPS-20000 includes an annual subscription so there is no additional fees for one year.
