How to build your own wrist-worn, heart-rate monitor

This reference design (see https://goo.gl/eFnEx9) for a heart monitor uses an optical technique – measuring light transmission through the skin – to detect blood flow resulting from the pumping action of the heart. It would be fun to start here and experiment with extracting other kinds of information about the heart by analyzing the output of the sensor.
