When I plug it into the USB port no new USB device is detected by my OS (Windows 2000 Pro). When I install the CDM_Setup.exe FTDI drivers no new COM port appears in my device manager.
Is my AVR_USB_JTAG broken?

you might try this…
Unplug the USB device
In control panel, device manager, hardware, ports
choose menu option for show hidden devices
remove the problem device - right-click as I recall
now plug in the usb device and you should see the prompts - I think it will rediscover the driver already on the disk.
Of course, try the device on a different PC if this fails
Resolved!
The USB host controller chip of the laptop I was working on couldn’t supply the power that the FTDI chip inside the AVR-USB-JTAG programmer needs so it didn’t ‘start up’. On another PC it does work correctly.
I looks like I’m gonna need a USB-hub with an external power supply to get it to work
weird. I thought even a laptop has to supply the current specified by the USB standard to get certified!
