is there anyway to limit the output of NMEA sentences of our choice from the Garmin 12XL. ?

Not sure about the 12XL, but I have a Garmin receiver and there is a special utility for it that allows you to choose which NMEA sentences are outputted. I'd suggest seeing what Garmin provides for yours.

No, don't remember the name. I'm sure Google will tell you if something exists for yours. The software I was using was designed for and only for my receiver.
