Hello,
I have bought the Lipo charger PRT-10217. Now I have a LiPo battery from Adafruit https://www.adafruit.com/product/258. Is it possible to charge this Lipo battery with this charger? I have read that the battery has a security that the battery does not overload and your charger has it too? This does not make problems if both has a security built in? What is when I will use another LiPo battery that has not a security built in?
What is if I let the battery for example over night powered in with the charger to load it up, and the battery is full but still connected with the power supply and the charger? Is it dangerous? Or no problems at all?
I have read the LiPo must have every time a loaded capacity and should not be empty that the battery does not dies.
Best regards
Stef
Hi Stef.
While we haven’t tested that particular battery with our charger, I don’t see anything that would lead me to believe it wouldn’t work. Both Adafruits batteries and ours use the same connector and polarity so you should be just fine.
There’s no ‘security’ in the battery like you’d find in a iPhone battery but there is a small board that protects the battery from over voltage and over current. There may be under voltage protection as well, but you’d need to confirm that with Adafruit. You generally don’t want to run a lipo battery all the way down as it damages the cell. I would imagine the battery is probably protected against that though. (Most batteries with a little circuit board attached like this one protect against over discharge.)
It would be fine to leave the battery connected to our charger overnight. The charger has a over voltage detector built in and also has a time that will shut the charger off if the battery is taking too long to recharge so you don’t need to worry about overcharging the battery.
It’s OK to have the battery attached to your project and charger at the same time as well. Worst case, the battery takes longer to charge than normal if your project is using close to 500mA of current.
Hope this helps!
Hi,
Very cool! Thank you very much! This is just what I had to know. That is perfectly, because I would like to build in this charger into my project and connect it to charge and use it at the same time, also if the battery is empty. - Perfectly!
Thank you very much and regards
