Safest Powerbank?

I want to make a power bank for a project with a motor that needs 5V. It takes less than 100ma but around .5A - 1A would be good I think. Then a lipo battery that can be recharged. So, a charger and booster.

My main priority is to have it be fullproof with regards to safety, now and into the future. Correct me if I’m wrong but the Charger/Booster doesn’t have over/under/short protection for batteries. So we are meant to use a battery that has that protection on it already. That’s fine, but I think I would also like it on the board to have an extra layer of protection in case there is a fault with the lipo protection chip. Does that make sense?

Could I use the LiPo charger basic (which I think has all the battery protection) and connect it to the Boost Converter to get what I’m looking for?

I want it to be protected from anything someone throws at it. Any power source, old or new, or any fast-charging stuff that come up in the future.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi ingre.

The SparkFun LiPo Charger/Booster - 5V/1A has a SparkFun LiPo Charger Basic built into it so adding a second one wouldn’t benefit you in any way. The charger/booster board doesn’t have any overvoltage or reverse polarity protection on it’s charger input, that needs to be 5 volts max.

The charger on the charger/booster won’t output more than 4.2 volts but the booster portion does not have any undervoltage protection built in so you would have to rely on the circuit in your battery to provide that. All the single cell LiPo batteries we carry have a protection circuit built in.

Hi, do you think you will ever come out with a Charger/Booster that has all that protection built in it? I would really love it if there were something like that. If not, should I just be looking at regular powerbanks that I can buy, like Anker or something? From what I’ve been reading there is a lot of protection on commercial products, like powerbanks, phones, etc.

Probably no, but it’s possible in the future. Unless you’re going to design your own board your only choice would be to look at the already available consumer power banks that have the features you’re looking for.

Yeah, I see what you mean about the consumer power banks, that makes sense. Thanks a lot
