How do the live streaming cameras on drones work, I know they are called wifi, but there is no wifi 1 mile up in the sky?
I don’t really know how they work, but why would there not be “wifi” 1mi up in the sky. With clear line of sight, and some decent gain in the antenna, the drone could broadcast using wifi. I am not saying its true, just saying its possible.
Having said that here are a few video streaming devices for drones. They happen to use frequencies close (or common to wifi) but the protocol is probably different.
How would I go about making a project with one?languer:

Control, telemetry and video are satellite based.

Perhaps if you explain the details of what you are trying to achieve someone here with experience on that area could make some suggestion. A quick review of google showed that there is a significant community for FPV and they are all LOS-type communication (e.g. http://www.getfpv.com/fpv.html).
FPV is in fact line of site (LOS). If you can see it you can send and receive telemetry, control and video signals to the drone. Coverage is 1 to 2 miles is possible but, you have to have no obstacles to interfere with the signal.
