LuMini Ring not working

I bought two LuMini rings.

A 1 inch and a 2 inch and I can’t get them working.

I tried multiple Fastled sketches (provide in LuMini hookup guide) and different pin configurations.

Also tried with Arduino Every and Nano.

And triple check the wiring and soldering.

Using a stable 5v power supply.

I’ve used Fastled for a while now and the code looks fine.

I want to use the LuMini with fastled because of the separate clock so I can run PWM to control a COB leds Brightness.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Here’s photo of the setup.

The sketch is Example1_RingTest.ino from the Hookup guide.

#define DATA_PIN 2 (green wire)

#define CLOCK_PIN 3. (Blue wire)

I also did continuity test on all wires. All good. No shorts.

Ok, thanks for those…I think I figured it out
It is currently wired to D2 and D3, whereas example1.ino uses “16” and “17” which are a2 and a3

Move your 2 wires over to the other side/pins and give it a try

I tried that before but I set it up again to double check.

Still not working.

The number of LEDs is set to 40 (2”).

#define DATA_PIN 16

#define CLOCK_PIN 17

I’ve had no problem with dotstar leds.

Not sure then :-/

The wires having extra junctions might be part of the issue…it also might be worth verifying the elegoo power board is actually delivering 5v. Do you have any wires without splices?

Hi. I did a bunch of different tests.

  • continuity of wires good.
  • Different pins
  • Nano and nano every
  • Older Arduino IDE
  • Different sketches

It did work with CLOCK_PIN 13(SCK)

And DATA_PIN 11 (MOSI).

But when power is disconnected from ring, (Arduino still powered by USB) a random portion of the ring lights up red. And the power indicator on the power supply is dimly lit.

The Arduino needs to stay on for my project since it is driving PWM for a COB led.

I suppose that the ring could be set to all black instead of turning off the power but not the preferred method since I am controlling it with a switched potentiometer.

The ring staying partially lit while unpowered likely indicates a short somewhere…it might be worth tracing the wires/leads or re-solder their connections to the ring

Both the 1” and 2” rings respond exactly the same so I don’t think it’s a short. I checked the continuity across the pins and led 1. No short.

It being partly lite while power supply is off only happens when CLOCK is pin 13 (SCK) and DATA is pin 11 (MOSI).

Disconnecting DATA pin 11 (MOSI) stops it from being lit. (When no power).

The ring works fine ONLY on these pins (except remaining lit when no power).

It does not work on any other pins.

I also tried some dotstar LEDs from another project that worked fine on any pins. Now they only work on pins 13 & 11(as above). However they don’t stay lit when unpowered.

I wonder if the update for fastled might be the issue.

That being said, I’m going to try with a brand new Arduino Every and an older version of fastled since I’ve had no problems in the past.

Okay. I think that I have found the problem.

LED type APA102

With CLOCK_PIN = pin 3, DATA_PIN = 2.

Older versions of fastled work fine.

Version 3.10.4 and 3.10.5 not working on any pins except

CLOCK_PIN = 13 (SCK)

DATA_PIN = 11 (MOSI)

Using fastled version 3.10.3

Dotstar LEDs work fine.

LuMini rings still have issue as follows…..

When power is disconnected, and Arduino plugged in USB, LuMini rings still partially and randomly lit. And, power light on power supply is dimly lit. I soldered the 2” ring again to be safe. Still happens on both 1” and 2” rings.

Were they purchased from us? If so head over to Return Policy - SparkFun Electronics (contact vendor if purchased elsewhere) and we’ll get ya squared away with a refund

If I can still return it to you, that would be great. And if so, it would be great if you could test it to see if it’s flawed or if I messed it up when soldering. P.S. I’ve been soldering for about 30 years and never had problems like this.

I will keep the 1” ring (purchased directly from SparkFun) since I have removed the mounting tabs and soldered into my project. I’ll try to make it work somehow.

Dang it - unfortunately I don’t have any strings that I can pull for Amazon stuff, but anything from sparkfun.com I can (such as this case, I’d honor the warranty because it’s barely out of the return window)

You might be able to message the SF store @ amazon and see if they can work some magic
