Noob help - Turning on ADH8066 automatically

Just purchased a ADH8066 Evaluation Board + ADH8066 GSM Module

Forgive me, I thought it would be easier to use this device (am an electronics noob). I bought this really to act as an always on GSM modem for a server but now discovered that once you plug it in, you need to separately switch on with the ONKEY. Could anyone tell me what I need to short in order to replicate pressing the ONKEY button so I can wire it up to some other logic?

Thanks

I’m also a bit noobish and just got my own ADH8066 recently. About your question: In addition to the ONKEY button itself, one of the breakout pins is labeled “ONKEY”. Pressing the button shorts the ONKEY pin to the GND pin, so you can replicate that behavior with some external circuitry. I do not believe you can (and certainly should not) leave this pin grounded all the time.

If your sole ambition here is to have cellular internet for a personal computer/server, I recommend getting a device dedicated to that task. They work out of the box (complete with drivers to make it appear to be a network connection), and are cheaper than this module. Google “usb cellular modem” and you’ll find plenty. [Here is an example. As you’re discovering, the ADH8066 is for tinkerers that want to do something low-level, typically with microcontrollers.](Amazon.com)

Thanks, yes you’re right and I’ve bought exactly what you’ve described just now from eBay at a fraction of the cost! I’m normally very good at finding what I want online, heck knows what happened there!

Anway, gives me a chance to maybe embed this device into something else in the future so will keep.
