PonyProg COM Port not listed

From customer A. Catanoa via email:

I need a AVR-PG1 programer but looking at the PonyProg program this program only supports serial ports 1 and 3. The problem is that I am using port 9. Please advice if I can use this programmer with the PonyProg software.

It sounds like you are using a USB to RS232 adapter? I’ve never heard of a computer having a true physical serial port on com 9. You would have to have quite a few serial port extension cards to get up to 9.

I would not recommend using a USB adapter with the PG1 - I’ve never tried one with the AVR-PG1 or AVR-PG2 (parallel). It might work, but I have my doubts.

Sound like PonyProg only has software options for com 1-4. To get it to work with the PonyProg software you will need to force your comport to a different number. This is common place with USB dongles. Open up the device manager and look at the properties of the com port 9. In the advanced tab you will be able to force it to go to a lower number com port. Pony Prog should then enable the radio button for that port.

Good luck and let me know if I’m way off,

-Nathan

Thanks for your reply.

You are right, I am using a USB to Serial adapter.

I bought it from Parallax to program the BS2P and later use it to program a STK500/STK501/m128.

So far the adapter have been working fine until I bought a AVR-H128B.

I was really confused when some people from Spark Fun first said that the AVR-128B could be ONLY program with the AVR-PG1B and later said that also could be programmed with the STK500.

In the mean time, I bought one AVR-FG1B then later discover that PonyProg only works with ports 1-4.

I was not able in the past to change port in the USB-Serial adapter.

But If I CAN program the AVR-H128B with the STK500, that is the only thing I need.

 Hi:

I think I solved my problem.

I follow your suggestion.

Looking at the hardware manager, found that serial ports 3 thu 8 are used. Port 2 was free. Changed and my STK500 setup seems to be working OK.

Also the PonyProg was changed to port 2 and seem is OK now.

Thanks again.
