Ive got a AVR STK Serial Port Dongle Programmer and a USB to serial converter.
Now the programmer works fine on the comp with a serial plug, but i need to get it working on my laptop.
The USB/Serial software is installed and ive set it to various ports but pony prog doesnt want to work.
Does anyone have experience with this? thanks.
I Too have strugled with a similar problem. I was not using a sparkfun programmer but a kit from another local supplier. I would have spent months trying to get the two to communicate together and program a baord with no luck.
What software are you using to program you avr? I was trying to establish my connection with ponyprog (damn that neighing sound gets annoying!)
Sorry, but I think there’s no way to get it working with a USB to serial converter. This is because a PC serial port can work in both serial and bitbang mode, while USB to serial converter don’t have bitbang capabilites.
Usually cheap serial programmers use bitbang mode. It’s the same for parallel port programmers, they don’t work with an USB to parallel port converter.
If you want to program a microcontroller with a PC that only has USB ports there are two way that work for sure:
-
use an USB programmer, they aren’t cheap, but work well.
-
use a programmer with a serial port used in serial port mode, not bitbang. These programmer have a microcontroller inside that converts the serial protocol to some GPIO to program the chip connected to it. There are also schematics of such programmers available, so you can build your own.
Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me.
So i need to find a programmer that works in serial port mode. Does anyone know if this one will work then?

The ISP function of this JTAG works well for me. The JTAG works with Studio but I rarely use that. ISP loads fairly fast. Considering the price. Uses Serial/RS232.
