Prototyping services?

I have a design which I waited weeks to get the PCB for, and then once I got it, I realized I wasn’t able to solder the damn LCD cable onto it because my footprints were too small. After spending hours soldering, I realized I don’t want to be doing this myself… I just want my product to work. Does anyone know of a company where I can submit my design, have it reviewed, prototyped, and tested?

Your question is actually a few in one. Having a design reviewed, prototyped and tested are very different things.

For someone to review your design, you are really looking at contracting an engineer or a design house to build you something. I don’t know of any places which will simply look over your design and tell you if it’s ok. For a design house to build you something you will be looking at many man hours of work at whatever their going rate is, possibly between $50-$150/hr.

There are many companies that will do the prototype assembly, such as screaming circuits for one example. For professional assembly of a handful of units you will be looking at hundreds if not over a thousand dollars for a complex device.

Testing is the last part of your question, which is another problem entirely. If your design needs programming then whoever is testing it will need a way to program it, as well as the actual program to use. They will also need some sort of documentation for what your device does and the procedure to follow to test it.

If this is for a commercial project, it really sounds like you need to take your idea to an electronics design house and talk to them about a quote for prototyping your widget. If this is just a hobby project, I suggest finding out if there is a local hackerspace near you, where you can go and get some help from like minded people.

Thanks Gussy! Your post is very helpful. Unfortunately I am living in Ukraine right now and if I could find like-minded tinkerers, I probably wouldn’t even be able to speak with them :frowning: This is a device that I want for myself, and potentially a commercial product. I am going to post something on ELance and see what sort of response I get from there for hourly work. Thanks again!

Glad I could help :)

I forgot to mention alternatives like elance or odesk. You should be able to find someone there who will help you out. It may take a while longer but should be much cheaper than a design hoise.
