Qwiic Alphanumeric Display - Red SPX-16427 Example9_ScrollingString.ino does not work

I just bought this display and all the examples work ok except for the Example9_ScrollingString.ino. It compiles ok but when I upload it nothing happens on the display. I am using Arduino IDE 1.8.5 w/SF blackboard

I believe that example requires two alphanumeric display devices, set to different i2c addresses. I ran it last night, and it worked under those circumstances.
