RFID ID-12 external antenna

Hi,

I’m working on a wireless RFID reader, and I bought ID-12 from sparkfun, but I do not know how to make an external antenna?

My project is about using hands to read tags. My original thoughts is just attaching the reader aside the wrist, but the problem is for the disc tag I use, the read range is not good, only about 3-4cm, so I’m thinking of attaching an external antenna on the finger or aside the palm.

I think it is not possible for me to build an antenna, so I’m wondering is it possible to simply use the antenna inside a disc tag? I have a clear disc tag in hand which seems easy to break with scissors

Or still build an antenna? But how to? Anyone give me some suggestions please. Thanks a lot

Which module are you referring to? The [ID-2 or the [ID-12, because your ID-12 has a built-in antenna… :?

(Please tell me your doing something legal here…)](RFID Reader ID-12LA (125 kHz) - SEN-11827 - SparkFun Electronics)](RFID Reader ID-3LA (125 kHz) - SEN-11862 - SparkFun Electronics)

hi,

legal? why? adding external antenna is illegal?

I’m doing a project, attach a reader on hand, and then read tagged objects by toughing them. At first I thought of attaching the reader on the back of hand, as it says ID-12 have range of 15cm so I thought it is okay, but it turns out just about 3-4cm (maybe because I use small disc tags), so I cannot read things by touching them. Now I’m thinking of using an external antenna attach to a finger. And I’m wondering whether it is possible to use the coils inside a disc tag as an external antenna.

The tag I use is like this: http://orangetags.com/products/images/PVC-DiscTag.gif

Hope I make it clear, sorry I’m not native speaker ](RFID Reader ID-12LA (125 kHz) - SEN-11827 - SparkFun Electronics)](RFID Reader ID-3LA (125 kHz) - SEN-11862 - SparkFun Electronics)

Adding an antenna certainly isn’t illegal, i was just implying that i didn’t want you going 'round reading

peoples RFID cards in there wallets etc… (it was only meant to be read as a laugh )

Back to the topic on hand, i see that the ID-12 has antenna pins but not sure if you would get a greater

read range… :frowning: The stated range in the datasheet is proberbly for credit card size tags…

hihi,

don’t worry I did laugh, and i was kidding

I do not want a longer range, in fact the range of 5cm is good because when I touch one thing, I don’t want to read information from another thing. But I want to use an external antenna, because the reader is big in size and cannot put on fingers.

Maybe my proposal is silly  , but many thanks
