RTK FACET – Data for PPP Processing

PPP is a means for determining the precise position of a survey instrument. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precise_Point_Positioning)

In order to determine its precise position, my RTK FACET survey instrument must be configured to store a UBX file on its memory card in a binary format suitable for conversion to a RINEX file for subsequent PPP analysis.

My RTK FACET was delivered to me on 17May2022. Its identifying information is: rtkIdentifier=26, rtkFirmwareVersion=v1.10-Feb 21 2022, zedFirmwareVersion=HPG 1.13

My RTK FACET, configured as delivered to me, creates a UBX file on its memory card in text format, instead of in binary format. To confirm this, I changed the file name suffix from ubx to txt and viewed the text with Microsoft Notepad. That would not have been possible with a binary file. My RTK FACET appears to NOT be capable of being configured to store data on its memory card in a binary format which can be converted to a RINEX file.

Will new firmware become available for my RTK FACET which will permit it to be configured to produce a binary UBX file which can be converted to a RINEX file for precise position determination? If so, when?

Will it be possible for me to install the new firmware in my RTK FACET via the “Update Firmware” function on the WiFi Config screen?

Hi tomdonald,

No firmware changes are necessary. Please read the documentation covering the use of an RTK device for PPP: https://sparkfun.github.io/SparkFun_RTK … nent_base/

This shows how to record both binary RAWX and NMEA data to the log file. Give it a try and let us know if you run into any problems.

Cheers,

Nathan

Sparky:

The procedure described in your link seems to work. I tried the same thing numerous times earlier, without success. Sorry about whatever I must have done wrong then. If I figure out where I went wrong earlier, I will post it.

Thanks,

Tom

Nathan:

Thanks again for helping me configure my RTK FACET so that it stores data on its memory card in raw format in the UBX file for PPP processing.

SUGGESTION: Enhance your display so that it shows whether data is being stored in text only mode, or in text plus raw (binary) mode, so that it can be used for PPP determination. Perhaps you could have, on your display, a different image of the memory card storing data for each of the two modes of operation. With such a change, one is less likely to waste days storing data in the wrong format.

I recorded data in rover mode with my RTK FACET and copied the resulting UBX file from my memory card to my PC.

I installed, on my PC, the RTKLIB library which I downloaded from https://github.com/rtklibexplorer/RTKLIB/releases.

I used the RTKCONV program in RTKLIB to convert the UBX file from my memory card to an OBS file.

I then uploaded the OBS file to the CSRS-PPP service at https://webapp.csrs-scrs.nrcan-rncan.gc … ?locale=en. The service analyzed my OBS file and returned what it computed as the precise position of my RTK FACET in a PDF file.

I can now use the precise position determination in another RTK FACET operating in “base” mode for a local reference for my RTK FACET operating in “rover” mode.

Tom

Glad to hear it’s working.

Indicating the recording of the messages necessary for PPP is an interesting idea. Thanks!

The RTKLIB library which I downloaded from https://github.com/rtklibexplorer/RTKLIB/releases, after a recent Microsoft Windows update, appears now to possibly have a virus or some other such problem.

Accordingly, I have downloaded what appears to be an equivalent means for converting a UBX file to one which can be submitted to the CSRS-PPP service. This seems to work okay. https://docs.emlid.com/emlid-studio/#do … lid-studio.

i spoke with the developper of RTKLIB DEMO5 about the virus alert , it’s a false alert coz my bitdefender antivirus also detected it. so no worries
