Short range tag detection

Hi there,

I need some input for a project I’m working on.

I need to detect the precense of a small max 1x1 inch tag or a small cylinder, preferably passive device within a range 1 - 10 inches.

  • There is no need for any tag ID - just is the “tag-thingy nearby ?”

  • Low cost tag

  • Simple detector circuit (low cost, battery operated)

My first thought was a LC resonance device, but any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Martin

How about an RFID reader like the ID12?

You can get some very small RFID tags. Maybe a bit overkill for what you need but it’s a simple solution.

just 1 in. or less.

< $1/tag

Common NFC tags. Readable on all new smart phones.

I’m playing with them. Size of a quarter.
