Stepper Motor Question

Hi. I came across the Stepper Motor on the Sparkfun site (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=8420), and had a question.

The shaft of the motor is completely round, as opposed to the usual round w/ a flat side for the purpose of easier mounting. Anyone have any idea how to properly connect to this sort of shaft? any pics of some sort of gear or other attachment with a design that would allow it to fit onto this motor?

Small stepper motors like that usually have round shafts. The usual arrangment with a grub screw should work, it doesn’t deliver much torque.

You can always use a file or grinder to make a flat; just make sure the chips don’t end up in the motor.

The other thing I’ve done is drill a slightly undersized hole in whatever you are going to put on there, and then press it on really hard. Works well for plastic (Delrin, acrylic, etc.) and metal (use a very slightly undersized hole).

Most common, for me, however, is grinding down a flat in the shaft and using a set screw.
